Rules & driving
Can you drive without an MOT?
Usually you must not drive on public roads if the vehicle requires an MOT and none is in force. Exceptions on GOV.UK are limited — here is how to stay on the right side of the rules.

The default rule in Great Britain
If a vehicle is of a type and age that requires an MOT, driving on public roads without a valid certificate is usually an offence. Enforcement uses DVSA’s MOT database alongside police checks.
This article is not legal advice. Rules change and cases differ. Read GOV.UK — Getting an MOT and consider professional advice for complex situations.
Confirm status first with an MOT status check — do not rely on a sticker in the windscreen alone.
Documented exceptions
GOV.UK describes driving to a pre-booked MOT test as a recognised exception when the vehicle has no current certificate. The route should be direct and the vehicle must still be roadworthy — dangerous defects are not permitted.
Other exceptions can include driving to or from a place of repair. Distance, vehicle condition, and whether tax and insurance are in place still matter.
SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) vehicles must not be driven on public roads except in very limited circumstances described in GOV.UK vehicle tax guidance.
If the MOT failed but the old certificate is in date
A fail on a new test does not always cancel yesterday’s valid certificate — but dangerous defects override everything: the car must not be used until fixed.
For non-dangerous fails while an old MOT remains valid, GOV.UK still expects the vehicle to be roadworthy. See what an MOT fail means.
Fines, points and insurance
Penalties for driving without a valid MOT where one is required can include a fixed penalty and points in some cases. Exact outcomes depend on enforcement.
Insurers may refuse claims or argue policy breaches if the vehicle was not legally on the road. Check your policy documents if you are unsure.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a 10-day grace period after MOT expiry?+
Do not rely on an informal grace period. Once the expiry date has passed, the MOT is not valid in records. Book a test and verify exceptions on GOV.UK before driving.
Can I drive to MOT without insurance?+
Insurance is legally required separately from the MOT. You must have appropriate motor insurance for any use on public roads unless a very specific exemption applies — check GOV.UK motor insurance rules.
Do electric cars need an MOT?+
Most electric cars still require an MOT on the same age schedule as petrol or diesel cars in Great Britain. Exemptions are limited to certain vehicle classes — confirm on GOV.UK.
